Excerpt

Chapter 1: The Chosen One

She had been taking deep sighs since she woke up this morning. Each eye looking at her was just ascertaining whether she was ready or not. Standing under the shower, she was feeling each drop touching her body, an unknown sense of awareness had aroused inside of her. She closed her eyes while feeling the water massaging her head, opened them, and took another deep sigh. Sitting at the breakfast table was another task which was delaying the act as a chosen one.

“Are you ready my dear?” her mother asked while slightly rubbing the back of her hand.

“Yes,” she responded with assurance in her eyes.

“It is a big day, but remember we will be with you all the while,” the father said.

“She will do her duty very well, that’s why everyone has chosen her. At every point in her life, she has proven herself, and she will prove it again today that she is the chosen one for a reason,” the sister said.

His eyes were filled with fear, but they didn’t ask for mercy, for he knew what was coming his way. He was being told repeatedly that this day would free him from all the fears.

Chapter 2: The Compass of Justice

Our world works on a common feeling of right and wrong; this right is the true north in the compass of justice. And wrong is the south. Whenever we pass a judgment, we refer to the true north. When the actions of a person point towards the south, we call it the rarest of the rare crime.

While we do follow the “doctrine of no wrong”, where we do proclaim that no person is bad, it is just the perspectives and circumstances which prove them to be wrong or right. But quite often we do come across situations where we have to decide between right and wrong, and in such situations, we refer to the compass of justice.

Any deflection from the true north means that the actions of a person are not in accordance with the accepted behavior of a true Utopian society; the one which we aspire and struggle to become. The east represents the actions which are not meant to hurt anyone, physically, emotionally, mentally or in any other form, but these actions do represent a callous behavior which unintentionally hurts someone. Such actions we try to correct by bringing to the notice of the doer and the general public the Dos and Don’ts that we have to follow. The deflection towards east do not account for a crime but corrections need to be done so that such incidents do not repeat in future.

The lapses of the system also fall between the right side the true north and south. These lapses need to be corrected with or without penalties.

But he left side of the true north and south call for punishment; our system has punishments for all the degrees, minutes, and seconds between the cardinal points of north and south. The biggest form of punishment being the capital punishment; which serves a purpose way bigger than punishing the doer. The purpose to delineate accepted and unaccepted behavior, to set a correct order, to make aware of all the wrong that can be done in the society; all the wrong that exists and all the wrong which is still unseen and unknown.

We strive to keep away such actions and behaviors from the minds of all the people.

Between Dreams & Reality: A King Payne Short Story!

"Ever had one of those nights where you're not quite sure what's real and what's a dream?  Today, I'm thrilled to share my previously published story that perfectly captures that hazy, in-between feeling. It's a tale of missed connections, late-night adventures, and the blurred lines between fantasy and reality..." I Should Have Slept That Night It was 10:00 PM. I had just woken up after a long nap, thanks to attending five lectures and a guest lecture. Fortunately, the next day was a holiday. I was feeling famished, and the mess had closed, so I thought of going out for a paratha. I went to Andy’s room and asked if he wanted to join me, but as usual, he wouldn’t leave the campus even if a catastrophe occurred in his room. Damn lazy fellow he was. "Come on, let’s go!” I said. “Why don't you just sleep?” Andy replied. “I haven’t eaten anything; I slept off,” a hungry me said. “Why don’t you just order from Kukkad Wale?” Andy suggested. But the f...
